Uses of Melamine Resin in Manufacturing

The famous melamine dinner sets that we use are only one of the many uses that melamine resin can be used for. A common material used in manufacturing, Melamine is a type of plastic that is in huge demand, not just in the dinnerware market but in a number of other industries. The following article guides you through what melamine resin is made of and the different uses in today’s manufacturing industries.

Melamine formaldehyde or melamine resin, as it is commonly known, is a rigid thermosetting variant of plastic. It is formed using formaldehyde and melamine through the process of polymerization.

Melamine dinnerware which is a well known dinnerware material known to households is manufactured using the melamine resin. However, the use of the resin in the manufacture of dinnerware has declined over the past few years. This is because the material has a number of shortfalls as compared to other dinnerware material. It is prone to cracking, chipping and staining and isn’t microwave safe either making it a less popular choice in the manufacturing of dinnerware materials.

However, the melamine resin has a number of other significant applications that makes it a highly demanded material. The construction industry makes extensive use of this resin, beginning from building materials to household fittings such as cabinets and countertops. The resin is also used in the manufacture of flame resistant clothing to a great extent. Detailed description of the applications are as follows.

Applications of Melamine resins

  • The foremost application of the melamine resin is in the manufacture of protective and decorative laminates. Further on, these laminates are used to manufacture file board, flooring and furniture.

Almost 50% of the melamine resin produced is used for manufacturing construction materials such as Low Pressure Laminates (LPL) for laminate flooring, High Pressure Laminate (HPL) for countertops and ready to assemble white boards that are found in almost every office and furniture. Using melamine resin, manufacture of these products, are able to create long-lasting, durable and glossy surfaces.

  • Melamine resin is often used in kitchen utensils and plates. Melamine resin utensils and bowls are not microwave safe. As with all thermosetting materials, melamine resin cannot be melted and, therefore, cannot be recycled through melting.
  • Another major application of the melamine resin is in the wood processing industry. Here, they are used as adhesive and impregnating resins, for the production of Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and Particle Board (PB).

Melamine resins when added to softwoods can be used to produce high quality building support materials like panels, which are otherwise produced using slow-growing expensive hardwood, traditionally. When added to woodchips and other waste wood products, melamine resins can be used to manufacture Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), Particle Board (PB), Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) and Oriented Strand Board (OSB), which are essential materials for the construction industry.

  • Finally, the melamine resin is also used to manufacture a variety of automotive paint additives, enamels and surface coatings. Higher quality melamine resins are used in the manufacture of a wide variety of industrial, commercial and household molded products including thermal liners, heat resistant aprons and gloves, flame retardant clothing, treated upholstery fabrics, specialty papers.
