There is no hiding from the fact that our planet is in the middle of an environmental crisis. The radical weather and images of sea animals being suffocated by a tide of plastic are evidence that something needs to be done – and quickly. While it is almost impossible to halt global warming now, we can do something to slow it down, but it means everyone, in particular businesses, doing their bit. Even small companies can make a huge impact, but if you don’t quite know where to start, here are a few tips to get you on your way to being an eco-friendly business.
Check that your land is being used responsibly
Water leaks and the irresponsible disposal of chemical and toxic waste is a massive problem for the environment. By keeping an eye on the land that your business sits on and having a regular environmental assessment is one of the most important things that you can do. Toxic waste not only is a risk to the environment but to human and animal life as well.
Reduce single-use plastic consumption
If your workplace uses single pod coffee machines or plastic water cups – stop. Single-use plastic is one of the most significant hazards to the environment, and you only have to turn on the news to see the effects it is having. Replacing these will make a huge difference. Purchase mugs or travel mugs and cups that can be washed and reused.
As we have mentioned above, plastic is the biggest environmental focus at the moment, but our usage of paper needs to be carefully monitored. Just because it can be easily recycled does not mean it isn’t a waste of natural resources. It is easier than ever to cut down on paper use in the workplace. There are countless digital systems out there for you to use, from cloud storage systems where you can upload important documents to workflow management tools, saving you the hassle of memos and hard copy diaries.
4 Reduce energy consumption
This tip also has the benefit of reducing your energy bills, saving you money. Have a policy of switching lights off if not in use, turning down the heating by a degree or two, switch to energy-saving lightbulbs and upgrade any appliances to newer, more energy efficient ones. You could go one step further and consider ways of producing your own power. Installing solar panels is becoming increasingly popular, and they generally pay for themselves within a year or so. In some cases, they can actually make you money, as some energy companies will pay you for the excess energy that they produce so that it can be a worthwhile business investment.
You can’t change the world single-handedly. No one can. But by making small changes here and there, you will be helping on a much larger scale and really make a difference. By putting some of these tips into practice, you will be well on your way to keeping our planet safe for generations to come.
