Welcome to the Opp & Covington
County.
In the 1990's, the City of Opp faced economic hardships with the signing of the NAFTA and other free trade agreements. The loss of at least six major sewing factories, in addition to the major downsizing of Opp's remaining textile industries could have been enough to defeat any small town. However, Opp's leadership decided that it was time for the town to make its "come back" and has done so through actively pursuing economic development and concentrating on the growth of its existing businesses. Among the many industries that have chosen Opp for their home, MFG/Alabama, a division of Molded
Fiber Glass Companies of Ohio, stands out with its continual growth and economic impact. MFG
manufactures molded parts for Wind Generation for General Electric.
MFG has an impressive history, having produced the first molded fiberglass body for
the Chevy Corvette in 1953. The company also produced the first fiberglass boat.
- Blue Sky Imaging, Inc., located a facility in the Winn Dixie building in 2007. Blue Sky is a data imaging company that converts paper documents to electronic documents and provides as a data storage facitlity for businesses who are required to save paper documents for a certain period of time.
- Advanced Airlift announced in early spring that they will be opening a new plant in Opp in late August and will manufacture various aircraft parts.
- A new 40,000 square foot speculative building will be delivered to the industrial park in middle to late July with a strong industry prospect already laying claim to the site.
- One June 21, 2008, The Indian Creek Development Subdivision held an open house of the first home.
- The new elementary school and Mizell Memorial Hospital Wellness Center are well under construction with projective opening dates in 2009.
- Southern Independent Bank, with a branch office in Opp, will be moving into their permanent home, located between Ted's Pharmacy and Fred's Dollar Store, this Fall.
- Set to open soon is the national hotel chain, Best Western, which is located on Opp's bypass.
- The Lake Grocery, located on north 331, is open again with a new owner offerning travelers with fuel and snack needs, and provides a permanent display of live rattlesnakes throughout the year for those visiting the home of the Rattlesnake Rodeo.
For years, people from up north; Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan and as
far away as Canada have come through Opp on their way to the beautiful beaches
of the Gulf Coast.
It is this proximity to the coast and the warm weather and friendly people that
now makes Opp and Covington County a wonderful place to raise your family and
start a business.
The City of Opp Mayor and City Leaders are pro business and pro
economic development which makes the decision to do business here a smart one.
We welcome you to visit our city and see what everyone else has come to know - Opp really is the "City of Opportunity".

Opp Train Depot to be Renovated

On June 26th, a town hall meeting was held at the depot to give our citizens an opportunity to share their thoughts on the future renovations of the train depot. Those in attendance all agreed that they would like to see the space to include offices, a small conference room, kitchen and a large conference/banquet room. Everyone is very excited to have this project as part of the down town revitalization plan. This project, along with the sidewalk and utility projects for Covington and Main Street, give proof to our citizens and tourists that our Mayor, City Council and citizens are open for growth and new business opportunities. It is a very exciting time to live in Opp, Alabama.

Join Our
"Share the American Spirit"
Project

Most of us take for granted the different tasks and events that seem to just occur. For instance, for years flags have flown throughout town on various holidays and we never consider who put the flags out and the planning and preparation that went into the flags being displayed. For years, the Opp Civitan Club handled this project and did a wonderful job making sure that flags flew proudly on major patriotic holidays.
However, the Civitan Club in Opp disbanded and many of the great projects, that they supported, are no longer available in the area. The Chamber has been looking into starting this program again and we want to encourage as many businesses, individuals, churches, etc. to be involved.
Our plan is to have flags on ten holidays during the year. Flags would be displayed on: Inauguration Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veteran Day. Anyone who would like to have a flag displayed at their place of business or home would pay a yearly fee to have their flags displayed.
For more information or if you or your business would like to participate in the Holiday Flag Program, contact the Chamber at 493-3070.
